Izzy the novel

My soon to be published novel Izzy is set against an ever changing backdrop of places and some iconic events of the 19th Century.  In an age when women had few opportunities and no property rights, Izzy fights to achieve the financial independence which finally frees her from the control of the men in her life. This is a story of determination and perseverance, a reflection on human strength and weakness and one woman’s fight to succeed against all odds.

The story is fiction but is based in some of the facts discovered in the research for my website Dr Barry Cotter; the First Doctor in Melbourne. The 19th Century was a time of great change, innovation and progress as well as devastating crises as the following links to background events in the novel show.

I had a lot of fun writing Izzy. I especially enjoyed the research and the challenge of weaving the story into an authentic backdrop, of seeing life from the perspective of a woman in the mid 19th Century and of highlighting universals such loyalty, betrayal, courage and self interest that are part of the human condition and defy time and place.

You can follow Izzy‘s progress to publication by subscribing to my newsletter on the sidebar.  I expect to publish it in 2021 and will keep you informed,
